Data Analysis Techniques Readings


Connaway and Powell Chapter 9

Statistical Analysis: a form of analysis that deals with developing and applying methods and techniques for the organization and analysis of data that is typically quantitative so that conclusions that are developed from this data can be evaluated in an objective matter.

Categories: Categories are necessary to organize the data so that it may be analyzed. The categories should be established before data collection actually occurs.

Content Analysis: is a systematic and quantitative analysis of information. It should always follow the scientific method.

Latent Content: Latent content is difficult to quantitate. It is conceptual in nature and is not directly observable in analysis. It can often relate to emotions or other things that can’t be counted or observed quantitatively.

Qualitative Content Analysis: A form of content analysis that focuses predominantly on speech, texts and their contexts. As it’s terminology insinuates, it is analysis that is of a qualitative nature rather than the quantitative nature that content analysis typically employs.

Conventional Qualitative Content Analysis:  Qualitative content analysis where coding categories are created directly and inductively from raw data.

Discourse Analysis: The analysis of many forms of discourse, including all spoken discourse, whether it be formal or not, and all written text of any kind. In ILS this could apply specifically to reference interviews as an example.

Hermeneutics: In hermeneutics a researcher has preunderstandings of a concept of interest and focuses on relationships between texts. This method of analysis is reflexive.

Deductive Reasoning: A way in which one uses logic to come to conclusions  that are true when using a broader group of tenets that are also (assumed) true.

Induction: The opposite of induction, Induction is when one observes specific facts and logically comes to a more general, broader conclusion.

Measures of Central Tendency: These measures are most concerned with identifying a single number that can summarize an entire data set.

Measures of Dispersion: Quite the opposite of the measures of central tendency, the measures of dispersion show the outliers of your data set.

Frequency Distribution: Frequency distribution is when the counts of how many cases there are in a category of a variable are organized into a table. This is done when analyzing categorical, or nominal, data.

Chi-Square Statistic: The Chi-square statistic is when you measure the difference between observation and what might be expected of a population in general.

Wildemuth Chapter 35

Codes: labels that are structured in syntax that are typically linked to data elements or chunks. Could also be defined as aggregates of data elements that the researcher or analyst views as coherent.

Optimal Matching Approach: An approach that involves direct comparison of the similarity (or lack thereof) of two sequences in completion.

Wildemuth Chapter 36

Correlation: A method of statistical analysis in which you examine the relationship that exists between two variables. When two variables are “perfectly correlated” then the variability of one variables is able to explain all the variability of the other variable.

Direction of the Relationship: The direction of the relationship between variables is indicated by the correlation statistic and it’s sign. When the sign is positive it means that as a variable increases the other variable will consequently also increase. If the sign is negative then as one statistic increases the other will decrease.

Wildemuth Chapter 37

Power: The ability to reject a hypothesis that is null at a significance level. It means that one can intuit a difference when one actually exists. Lack of power is a huge problem in social scientific research design.

Repeated Measures Design: When each participant is assigned to multiple conditions instead of just one.

Data Collection Techniques Readings


Powell Ch. 5

The steps to planning the questionnaire include:

1.     Write your problem statement.
2.     Review the literature
3.     Brainstorm a solution
4.     Figure out what information is needed to test the solution in step three.
5.     Identify your population.
6.     Pick the technique that will best serve to collect the data.

Open-ended questions: Also known as unstructured questions, these questions allow for free responses, where as a fixed response questions limit the possibilities in regards to answers.

Wildemuth Ch. 18

Data Cleansing: During data cleansing corrupt or unnecessary data is removed and raw data files are processed for secondary data sets. This could include user sessions, query sessions, term occurrences, etc.

Path Completion: Web log mining applications use path completion to add any page references that may be missing so that those that may not be included because of page caching will be included in the reined log and then analyzed.

Think-aloud protocols: A Research method that is employed in order to understand a subjects cognitive processes based on any verbal reports of their thoughts that occur during experimentation.

Concurrent protocols: Concurrent protocols in general follow procedures of the protocol and ask the subjects to speak their thoughts out loud while working to solve problems.

Direct Observation: A data method that is only appropriate when there is something to observe. This data method focuses on participant behavior in a setting.

Nonparticipant Observation: In nonparticipant observation, the researcher strictly observes only.  The researcher does not participate in the setting that is being observed.

Participant Observation: Participant Observation is when the researcher, on top of participating in a setting, is also observing the setting and the population within it. By doing this, the researcher gains a greater understanding of the populations habits and culture.

Passive Participation: Passive participation is when the researcher is only consider a participant in that they are present in the setting being observed and researched.

Research Diaries: Research diaries are a set of data collection instruments and/or techniques. This could be anything from descriptive event logs to narrative personal accounts.

Unstructured Diaries: An unstructured diary is an open-ended diary. The writer is given little to no guidance as to the content that should be included; this includes form as well.

Unstructured Interview: An unstructured interview is an interview in which very little of the conversation is guided or preplanned. These types of interviews are dependent on social interaction between interviewer and subject.

Descriptive questions: Descriptive questions allow interviewees to give descriptions about their activities.

Essential Questions: Questions that deal with the central focus of the research.

Probing questions: These require the interviewee to elaborate further on their answers to any given question. The purpose of these questions is to gather more information.

Focus group: A group of people who are gathered by researchers in order to discuss a topic of research.

Focus Group moderator: A Focus group moderator keeps any focus group discussion on track and can lead to either success or failure of a focus group.

Survey Research: Survey Research is a method in which researchers can statistically estimate the distribution of characteristics of a population based on a small part of the population being surveyed.

Pretesting: Pretesting is when the survey instrument is reviewed either by experts or even by members of the target audience.

Construct: An object of measurement that scientists put together that does not exist previously as a observable dimension of behavior.

Cognitive or affective variables: These variables can include a person’s attitudes, interests, beliefs, or feelings and are not directly observable.

Response style: A source of bias that is problematic because they lead to results that measure individual characteristics that are not the construct of interest.

Semantic Differential Scales: a response format that consists of a word or phrase as stimulus and adjectival pairs that are opposites. The adjectiveal pairs or displayed on a continuum and the resondants are to mark their attitude toward the stimulus by marking that point on the continuum

Koontz, C., Jue, D., & Lance, K. C. (2005). Neighborhood-based in-library use performance measures for public libraries: A nationwide study of majority-minority and majority white/low income markets using personal digital data collectors. Library and Information Science Research, 27(1), 28-50.


Introduction:

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate the need for proper data collection methods in libraries in regards to non-book usage, i.e. internet usage, and also to demonstrate the need for “neighborhood-level” library data. Previous studies have shown that when library populations diversify, circulation tends to shrink. This does not, however, mean that libraries are any less busy. It simply means that minority groups and low-income whites tend to use other aspects of the library that are not being statistically monitored. Because of this, circulation can appear low leading to cuts in funding and often merging or closing of libraries in urban and socioeconomically diverse areas. This relates very closely to my topic because it is demonstrative of the inequities in library funding in high minority and/or low income areas. The researchers also employed survey techniques that I also plan to propose in my formal research proposal.

Problem Statement:

The researchers in this study wanted to answer three main questions:

1.)  What library-usage differences are present between library markets in majority White/low income markets and majority-minority markets?
2.)  What library performance measures could be created to discover and measure these uses?
3.)  Could a standardized data collection system be developed for all different public library systems.

Literature Review:

This study did not publish a formal literature review, however, many sources were cited within the article itself. A large portion of the cited literature deals with how to best accommodate diverse library populations and analyzing library services in urban environments.  Another portion of the referenced sources dealt with different library markets and how to forecast use in the different markets present. Finally, the researchers spent some time researching how distance from a library can affect how much usage and what type of usage is present. Many of these sources would also be helpful for my own research and I plan on utilizing them.

Method:

The researchers have self-proclaimed their research design to be “multifaceted”. For their population, they had to find public libraries that had a patron base of majority-minority or majority White/low income. To do this they initially used census data to identify the communities they should be researching in. By using this data and geographic information system (GIS) data, they were able to identify 3536 public library outlets that met their requirements. This is equivalent to about 20% of the United States’ library outlets.  They then chose a sample out of the 3536 libraries to equally represent the Northeast, South, Midwest, and Western regions of the United States. This narrowed the sample to 495 outlets.

After the sample was chosen, a survey was created that would ask questions in regards to data collection practices that were already in place for the library outlets in the population. In many cases, libraries did not answer or denied participation. This narrowed the population down to 177 libraries. Over the two year period, another large portion of the libraries in the study for various reasons decided not to or were unable to participate, so the sample was narrowed down to 92 libraries who participated from beginning to end of the study.

It is important to note that in analysis this project was not designed to answer why the data collected in regards to library usage might vary, but simply to prove that it does vary. The researchers chose to analyze their data in statistical chart form for different racial groups. They offered percentages on how different racial groups use their libraries so that one reading this study might be able to see all of the data side by side. This further demonstrates the need for neighborhood-level data so that not all libraries are judged by the simple manner of circulation percentages.

Caveats:

Because of the time at which this data was collected, the processes were understandable and admittedly by the researchers complex and complicated-which can often lead to error. Another major caveat is that when the population was narrowed down by region study then lost a large portion of participants, and it is unlikely that after losing such a large group that the distribution of participating libraries would still be even across the four geographic regions listed.

Methods/Ethics/Theories Readings


Powell-Chapter 3

Action Research: A type of applied research that typically involves an external researcher who focuses on defining a problem and resolving it with workable solutions.

Evaluative Research: A type of applied research that is concerned with testing an application of knowledge for a program or project in particular. This is typically a practical form of research.

Powell-Chapter 4

Cohort Study: Survey’s that are used to collect data from a population over and over again. However, while the population is the same, the people surveyed from the population are not.

Sociometric Study: A survey that works with more than one group and reveals and studies the relationships between the groups.




Wildemuth-Chapter 6

Theory: Theory has many definitions. It could mean something as simple as a “casual hunch” about something.  Generally, a theory encompasses things like working hypothesis, speculations, and axiomatic systems of thought.  It can also make predictions about the outcome of observations.

Middle-Range Theories: Middle-Range Theories are at the center of the theory continuum, between special theories that are only applicable to a small range of phenomena and general theories which are applicable to a large range of phenomena.

Developing the Study


Wildemuth:

Research Question: A research question is a guiding factor in what you research and how you research it.  It is a clear statement that you can build your study around.  Having a clear research question can also help when having to request and justify funding.

Hypothesis: This is typically a statement that the researcher assumes to be true, or in other words, a question that we think we already know the answer to. Often a hypothesis is assuming the relationship between two variables.

Williamson:

Problem Statement: The problem statement states the major questions in full grammatical sentences that the researcher is trying to answer through either quantitative or qualitative research.

Sub-questions: The act of creating sub-questions when researching helps to break down research into smaller pieces, often making it more manageable for the researcher.  All sub-questions should be a part of and relate directly back to the larger research question.

Patten:

Case Study 14:

Strict Replication (of a study): A strict replication of a study is where a researcher decided to conduct a study that has already been done in the exact manner it was done before (in regards to the major and important parts of the study).  When doing this, the researcher is attempting to see whether or not the same results will be achieved.

Modified Replication (of a study): A modified replication of a study is where a researcher modifies certain aspects of a study that has already been conducted to see what differences in results will be found.

Case Study 15:

Sociofile: A digital source that has copies of the print versions of Sociological Abstracts  as well as Social Planning/Policy and Development Abstracts.

Record: In regards to a journal article, the record contains  fields with information about the article.

Case Study 16:

Topic-by-topic description (or relevant research): The topic-by-topic description of relevant research contains the subheadings  necessary to help a reader delve into a long literature review.

Steps to a Literature Review:
·      Name the broad problem
·      Discuss why the problem is important
·      Write the topic-by-topic description of the relevant research
·      Discuss the results of the relevant research
·      Summarize the literature review
Pyrczak:

Abstracts: An abstract to a study should describe the purpose, highlight the research methodology, mention the important parts of the results, discuss any theories involved and avoid any references to future research.

Literature Reviews: A research review should identify the problem and why it’s important, discuss any theories involved, have subsections when necessary, define key terms when necessary, have citations for “factual” statements, and have the hypotheses or research questions logically in the introductory material.

Article:

Sei-Ching Joanna Sin (2011), Neighborhood disparities in access to information resources: Measuring and mapping U.S. public libraries’ funding and service landscapes, Library & Information Science Research, 33:1, 41-53.


Introduction:

This article serves to address the inequities present in public library funding between affluent neighborhoods and lower income urban neighborhoods. The author, Sei Ching Joanna Sin, recognizes the public library as a tool to “bridge such inequities”. This study is one of the only ones that recognizes neighborhood-level variations and examines statistics from all of the 9000 library systems in the country. The conclusions found were that there were huge disparities in funding between library systems, and that in most cases, the library systems in low-income areas were not properly funded and had less to offer their patrons. This is particularly unfortunate due to the fact that the impoverished are a segment of our population that can most benefit from library services.  I chose to review this article because I want to research the status of American library services towards the impoverished and perhaps the homeless. This subject is important to me because the library that I work for is in an urban environment and has a large amount of traffic from the extremely impoverished and transient patron.

Problem Statement:

Public libraries that are not properly funded suffer from a lack of information resources, which in turn makes these libraries incapable of “narrowing the information gap”. The problem that this study aims to analyze is two fold: firstly, the extent to which funding varies across public library systems in the United States must be ascertained. Secondly, where the significant disparities are present this study aims to discover how much these disparities are related to the income level of the area that the library is in.

Literature Review:

The earlier studies that the author used were more focused on physical access to materials that library patrons had. More recent studies also chose to focus on factors such as access quality and have made these important factors. The author also examined context, and environmental factors, but the most important areas of research focused on unequal access to information resources and unequal access to public library services.

Method:

This study was largely quantitative. It relied on statistics gathered from the Public Libraries Survey (PLS), National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), and the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). Census data was also ascertained for this study.

Caveats:

Some of the caveats and limitations that the author mentions is that while the household income was based on values from the surveys ascertained, the data was not altered to reflect and cost of living disparities between areas of the country. Purchasing power was also not taken into consideration.

As this study is mostly quantitative, it doesn’t take the qualitative approach of examining how patrons view their library’s effectiveness and services, and this area could be studied further.

The data studied was also from 2004 mostly, so significant changes could have happened and this study could be repeated with more recent data.

Introductory Readings


Williamson:

Positivist:  The positivist tradition of research is defined as when researchers use methods that would typically be applied to natural science research to areas in the social sciences.

Interpretivist:  The interpretivist research tradition is where researchers pay closer attention and give more emphasis to the meanings that people make as they interpret the world around them.

Connaway and Powell:

Deductive or systematic logic: Deductive logic involves the use of a syllogism, which begins with a basic idea. Once the researcher has their basic idea, they then apply that to a case.

Inductive reasoning: Inductive reasoning is sort of the opposite of deductive reasoning. Inductive reasoning starts with something that is fact and works towards something that is a theory.

Eldredge:

Analysis: An analysis is when the researcher examines something in detail in an attempt to grasp the ideas and nature of what is being examined.

Case Study: The case study is a very popular way to research. A case study depends on the researcher experiencing something. It could be a variety of things, a process, a technology, a project, etc.  Typically a case study examines something in real life.

Patten:

Topic 1:

Empirical Approach to Knowledge: Based on observations. The empirical approach is used in day-to-day life. While useful, these observations can be misleading.

Hypothesis: A hypothesis is a question that the researcher thinks they already know the answer to.

Topic 2:

Experiments: An experiment is where a researcher uses treatments to see if behavioral changes result.

Nonexperimental studies: Nonexperimental studies rely more on the observations of the researcher on those who are being researched. Typically these describe the studied how they are naturally without any treatments.

Topic 3:

Cause-and-effect: When observing cause and effect, a researcher typically wants to conduct an experimental research by giving a treatment and seeing it’s effect. Sometimes this isn’t possible because of ethical or legal considerations.

Causal-comparative study:  In these studies we typically look at a problem or condition and try to identify what might have caused it. In example, if obesity is the condition we would want to identify the cause of this, which in most cases would be overeating, but could be thyroid issues or other health problems as well.

Topic 4:

Census: A census is when you observe and perhaps count all members of one population. This can be animal or human.

Longitudinal research: Longitudinal research is when a trait is repeatedly observed and measured to observe any trends that may develop.

Topic 5:

Variable: A variable is something like a characteristic that must apply to at least two categories.

Mutually exclusive categories: When a subject can only belong to one category.

Topic 6:

Independent variable: In experimental studies, an independent variable is physically manipulated by researchers. This means that the researcher is physically doing something to a subject. In a nonexperimental study independent variables are observed as they occur.

Dependent variables: Dependent variables are variables that are changed by independent variables. The changes are dependent on the independent variables.

Topic 7:

Research hypothesis: Often called an educated guess, this is a theory that a researcher makes on the outcome of what their research question is.

Directional hypothesis: A directional hypothesis is where we try to guess which group we are studying will have more of something.

Nondirectional hypothesis:  A non directional hypothesis is where on states a research purpose.

Topic 8:

Conceptual definitions: Conceptual definitions are what we typically get from dictionary definitions- a concept of something, not necessarily a practical demonstration of something.

Operational definition: An operation definition is what happens when we add physical  action to a conceptual definition.

Topic 9:

Deductive approach: This is the approach that a quantitative researcher would use. Typically it involves researching literature  to plan the approach or hypotheses to be used in the research.

Inductive approach: This is the approach that a qualitative researcher would use. This researcher would begin to gather data on their subject right away and then use early research to plan other research.

Topic 10:

When should quantitative research be used:
·      Anytime you want to measure by numbers
·      When subjects are not available for observation
·      When money is low
·      When “hard numbers” are required by the audience
When should qualitative research be used:
·      When little is known about a topic
·      When closed or secretive cultures are examined
·      When emotions and subjective variables are involved predominantly.

Steps to conducting Quantitative Research:
·      Begin with an explicit hypothesis
·      Choose a random sample to study
·      Make sure the participant sample is fairly large
·      Use instruments that are scored objectively
·      Describe results statistically
·      Try to have limited contact with subjects

Standards for Reporting Humanities-Oriented Research

Humanities Oriented Research: An all encompassing term that involves many genres of the humanities for which social science research standards would not be appropriate.

Reflexive Education Research: This is research that takes education as the object of research

Standards for Reporting on Empirical Social Science Research

Problem Formulation: The problem formulation is designed to give a clear purpose to a study by describing the problem or question the study addresses.

Review of the relevant scholarship: This is a general overview of the scholarly works that relate to the topic being researched and should also include the criteria used to identify the scholarship.
